Crown Lengthening

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is performed when a tooth needs a new crown or filling, but there is not enough tooth structure left to properly fit or support the new restoration. During the procedure, the dentist will use a special tool to gently remove excess gum tissue and reshape the remaining tissue to expose more of the tooth surface.

Who Needs Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure done when a tooth needs a new crown but there is not enough tooth structure above the gums to support it. The dentist will remove some of the surrounding bone and gum tissue to ensure the new crown fits properly and does not damage the surrounding teeth or gums.

What Does the Crown Lengthening Procedure Entail?

During your procedure, Dr. Danner will use anesthesia in order to minimize any discomfort you may experience. We will begin by removing gum tissue and reshaping the bone around the tooth. This gives us the ability to place a new dental crown where there previously was insufficient tooth structure. In some cases, bone may be added to the area that needs the crown lengthening procedure.

What Are the Benefits of Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening has many benefits, such as:

  • By removing excess gum tissue and reshaping the gums, crown lengthening can improve the appearance of your smile as well as your oral health.
  • It can improve the health and appearance of a gummy smile. The procedure involves removing excess gum tissue and reshaping the gum line to expose more of your natural tooth.
  • This process can improve your oral function.
  • It can make you a better candidate for dental implants, braces, and dentures.

What Is Recovery Like After Crown Lengthening?

After your procedure is completed, you may experience some sensitivity or discomfort. Your gums may also be slightly swollen. These side effects are normal and should subside within a couple of days.
